Hog Deer Hunting Near Dallas, TX

The hog deer is technically a type of axis deer found in the Indian subcontinent, specifically in the northern plains, Myanmar and Indochina. Like other axis deer, hog deer have a somewhat stocky appearance and often only stand at about 28 inches at the shoulder. They weigh about 110 pounds and have a roughly 41-inch head and body length.

Their short legs aren’t the main reason they were dubbed the “hog deer”. Their name is largely a reference to the way in which they run with their head low to make it easy for them to duck below obstacles instead of jumping over them as other deer might do.
