Fallow deer, or “dama”, are pale brown “Old World deer” of the Cervinae subfamily of deer. There are only two types of dama – the common fallow deer and the Persian fallow deer. The common fallow, also known as the European fallow, is only native to Turkey, but was first populated throughout Europe during the Roman Empire. The Persian fallow is native to Iran and Israel.
Fallow are typically smaller than other deer, with males weighing between 130 and 220 lbs. and does weighing between 65 and 110 lbs. Fallow deer are herd animals except during the rut, and they thrive in grasslands and light woodlands.
