One of the largest deer species in Texas, elk are versatile animals that thrive in forest and forest-edge habitats. Texas has a much smaller estimated elk population than other states, numbering in the low thousands instead of the nearly 100,000 in New Mexico or the several hundred thousands in Colorado.

Male elk range in size from between roughly 400 and 1,100 lbs., while females have a smaller weight range of between 400 and 650 lbs. Bull elk antlers can weigh up to 40 lbs. and are usually shed in late winter or early spring when the elk’s testosterone levels drop.
