The American bison, a staple of both Western culture and American heritage, is officially the United States’ national mammal. It’s the heaviest and longest extant land animal in North America and second in height only to the moose.
Bison male head-rump lengths can reach up to a massive 11 and a half feet with wither heights up to six and a half feet. Bison weights can be anywhere from 700 to 2,600 lbs., but they average about 1,600 to 1,700 pounds.
Both male and female bison boast their distinctive short, curved horns that can grow out to about three to four feet in width and up approximately two feet.
