The Best Practices for Sustainable Land Management on a Ranch

When the team at Ranger Ridge first acquired our 2,800-acre property deep within rural Texas, it was littered with trash, abandoned oil field pipes and abandoned fences from ranches long passed. There were also non-native and invasive plants that were degrading the quality of the land.

We’ve spent years restoring the land to its natural state, creating a luxury ranch that shows off the beauty of rural Texas while offering first-class amenities for our residents' comfort. Our full-time ranch manager, wildlife manager and staff of twenty employees will ensure our property remains pristine year-round, implementing sustainable land management techniques so residents and members can enjoy the ranch lifestyle on unspoiled Texas land.

Features of Sustainable Ranch Land Management

Soil Management

Ensuring the soil is healthy is a key component of a functioning ranch. Everything from crops and drinking water to livestock depends on good soil. Working farms must rotate crops routinely and incorporate compost into the mix to enhance its fertility and lower the risk of depletion, but soil depletion isn’t a serious problem for natural landscapes with native plants.

Soil erosion during storm season is another big risk to farms and ranches in Texas. Our property features robust plant cover over the soil, which naturally combats erosion. Different plants possess varied root systems that can help protect the bottom layer of the soil as well.

Grazing Management

Grazing management goes hand-in-hand with soil management. Overgrazing will rob the soil of its plant cover, elevating the chance of soil erosion. Working ranches must rotate grazing to allow their plants time to recover and avoid soil compaction, which can lead to poor root growth and subsequently poor crop yield as well as dryness during a drought.

Water Management

Water management is especially critical in Texas, where droughts are common and potentially disastrous for ranches. Shared community spaces that require watering at Ranger Ridge are watered using thoughtful water conservation strategies to minimize water waste while protecting the soil from dryness. Our staff also works hard to preserve the quality of our drinking water as well as the creeks and ponds that decorate our landscape.
