The scimitar oryx, or the Sahara oryx, is a North African antelope that is unfortunately extinct in the wild. However, the scimitar oryx still thrives in nature and game preserves. As a desert-variation of antelope, the scimitar oryx are adapted to tolerate high temperatures and can survive on very little water.
The scimitar oryx, which stands just over three feet at the shoulder and weigh between 300 and 450 lbs., have strikingly long horns. Their name is derived from their horns’ resemblance to scimitars. These back-curving horns can be anywhere from just over three feet to nearly four feet long.
